LIGHT THE FIRE ANYWAY

I want to sit at a table with you

Eating toast and jam

Sun cracking through the veil of fireplace smoke

Pour me another cup of coffee

Read the paper

Spread the jam

Crack the egg

Your socked foot rubbing my leg

Quaint, safe, cottonball dreams

But I am gluten free

And I hate eggs

The paperboy’s job was outsourced long ago

And wood smoke is banned

Time is faster now

A cartoon snowball

Each rotation down

The ever steeper mountainside

Increasing in size

Stop!

Stop the impending doom

Children still ride bikes and defy time

And dreams are still another paradigm

In which we can still reside

REGRETS

Shards of what could have been Land on the capsule of what is And sting as they pluck at the eyebrows of the soul

THE KNOWING

Are we floating or scuffling? Shuffling or floating? Wanting to feel a form in the darkness And terrified of feeling something
